ARE KETENES INTERMEDIATES IN ESTERS REACTIONS?

An attempt to use cycloaddition to styrene in order to capture ketenes as possible intermediates in some reactions of carboxylic esters, so far explained by anionic intermediates, is reported. A capture of diphenylketene, formed from methyl or ethyl diphenylacetate in the presence of strong alkali, with styrene is realized.
