Many poultry producers are concerned with preventing vaccine reactions because of the potentially adverse effect on both livability and productivity. It is true that an adverse vaccine reaction can have a negative economic impact, and excessive reactions are especially common in broilers during the winter months. Excessive vaccine reactions can result in decreased bodyweights, increased feed conversion and mortality, higher medication costs and, possibly, higher condemnations. However, a vaccine reaction is a normal effect of live respiratory vaccine administration and is indicative of a response by the body's immune system Localised reactions also will occur at the administration sites of killed vaccines.
