CERTAIN ASPECTS OF ORTHODOX TEA MANUFACTURE

Of the 826 million kg of the tea produced in India, orthodox tea constitutes 88 million kg, the relative share of south India being 31 million kg. During the last three decades the quantity of orthodox tea produced in south India has declined sharplyfrom 131 million kg in 1980 to 57 million kg in 2003, i.e a decrease from 30 percent of the total production to 9 percent. It is imperative that for the sustainable growth of the tea industry the export performance should be improved. South India has been heavily dependent on CIS countries for exports, In the light of economic recovery in Russia, there is a shift in the buying pattern, favouring orthodox tea. Therefore, for competing in the international market, production of good quality orthodox tea must be given its due importance.
