Several readers have queried me on the risks of shifting a boat from a life in salt water to a new environment in fresh water. Don Hut-ton's recent e-mail is one example. He writes, "We own a Henry Devereux 38' mahogany-planked ketch, 1939, bronze-fastened. She has been in salt water all of her life. We wonder if there is a problem taking this boat into fresh water for a period of time. We had heard that the fresh water leaches the salt out of planking, causing it to go soft. Any thoughts you have on this would be greatly appreciated."
