The Kunz No. 113 Compass Plane

The hand plane is an extraordinarily effective tool for woodworking. Available in a plethora of sizes and lengths, it excels in making things straight, level, and flat. But those same qualities lessen its ability to generate a smooth and fair curve—either concave or convex. It simply is not the right tool for that job. The woodworker is left to rough in the shape as best as possible, then work by eye with the smoothing plane askew or by using,a spokeshave. In the past, woodworkers would make wooden planes with a consis- , tent and exact sweep and radius on the tool's sole for a particular job—be it a wagon wheel or a chair seat—and that worked fine for that one job. One could, however, end up with a corral full of one-trick-pony planes in their tool kit.
