Alice in Waterland, a new book by Lewis Carroll enthusiast Mark Davies, shows how ten miles of the upper Thames, from Godstow to Abingdon, played a crucial role in inspiring two of the world's greatest works of fantasy fiction, Alice In Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass. Thanks to Carroll's detailed diary, Mark Davies explains how many of the scenes in the books related to actual events on the river, and to the real people who lived and worked alongside. Alice in Wonderland had its genesis in a picnic rowing trip that Carroll, then a young clergyman and mathematician, and his friend Robinson Duckworth took up river from Christ Church College to Godstow on 4th July 1862.
