Robin Stonebridge, chairman of the Chesterfield Canal Trust, pointed out that ￡8m of public money has already been spent on the restoration - money that would go to waste if these plans go ahead in their present form. HS2 would isolate the two currently navigable sections from each other. "The authors of the HS2 proposals seem to be unaware of the restoration. We need decisions from Government about their intentions towards the canal."
