The Friends of Exeter Ship Canal are supporting a funding application for improvements to the unique double bascule/swing-bridge that takes the city's outer ring road across the canal. The swing-bridge opened in 1936 while the bascule bridge was completed in 1972. Both bridges are approaching the end of their lives and need renewing within the next decade, something described by the canal's supporters as 'a historic opportunity'.
