HISTORIC BRIDGE COLLAPSE ADDS TO PROBLEMS ON THE CALDON CANAL

A routine stoppage for repairs to Hazelhurst Bottom Lock proved to be the last straw for a historic bridge when it suffered catastrophic subsidence. The bridge was so badly damaged and obviously dangerous that all traffic over and under it was stopped by local boaters before any official involvement. Assessment by structural engineers concluded that demolition was the only course of action, and, as the bridge was a listed structure, permission was sought from Historic England and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.
