摘要

March was a month that was bookended by "days": International Women's Day on the 8th and World Water Day on the 22nd. In taking in the events and commentary around each day, I found myself thinking about their origins, what need underpinned their establishment. The following disparity struck me: women bear a disproportionate share of the burden when water resource development is poor. It is they who walk for hours to source water for their families and they who suffer the most through lack of safe access to safe water and sanitation. By contrast, women are under-represented in the leadership of water in the developed world. In the water industry in Australia, with a few outstanding exceptions, we are still overwhelmingly male at the top levels in most government, utility and private sector organisations.
