This paper presents the development of instructionnanalysis/scheduling CAD techniques to measure the distribution ofnfunctional-unit usage and the microoperation level parallelism (MLP),nwhich together determine the proper functional-unit allocation fornsuperscalar microprocessors, such as the x86 microprocessors. Thenproposed techniques fit in the early design exploration phase in whichnthe trace or microarchitecture simulator has not been available. Thentechniques have been applied to analyze several popular Windows95napplications such as Word, Excel, Communicator, etc., for their MLP andndistribution of functional-unit usage. The results are used to evaluatenthe resource allocation of several existing x86 superscalarnmicroprocessors and suggest future extension
