Our Region, Our Railway:The History of the Great Northern Railway 1857 -2007 by Robert McKillop and David Sheedy, 224 pages, hardback, published by the Australian Railway Historical Society, NSW Division, available from ARHS, NSW, 67 Renwick St Redfern NSW 2016 or Bookshop, Central Station, $65 plus postage. This book is the history from 1857 to 2007 of the first section of the Great Northern Railway of NSW. It provides an excellent overview. This book was published to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the railway from Newcastle to Maitland. It was commissioned as a study for RailCorp and has been expanded to include such things as architectural studies of the principal railway stations, studies of passenger, freight and coal traffic on the railway, coal mining, steel making, social factors affecting railway usage and employment, politics at State level, politics within the administration of the NSW Railways, the Railway unions, working conditions, floods, shipping, street tramways and Royal visits to the area by train.
