HALF A CENTURY OF CLASS 47s

Class 47s are without doubt one of the most successful - if not the most successful - diesel locomotives to come out of the British Railways modernisation programme of the 1950s and '60s. Designed as a mixed traffic loco for both express passenger and heavy freight trains, the fleet has now notched up an astonishing half a century in main line service. The fact that several examples are still doing what they were designed to do, albeit in much reduced numbers these days, is a feat only really matched by English Electric's Class 37.
