As more and more flexibility and capability is demanded of increasingly sophisticated OSVs, rules and regulations struggle to keep up with developments coming from industry. That's why class society Bureau Veritas has worked closely with industry to develop guidelines to make towing safer and to set standards for vessels involved in offshore lifting operations. Gijsbert de Jong, offshore service vessel manager, Bureau Veritas, explains, "The towing industry was crying out for harmonised guidelines to help designers build safe and efficient tugs suitable for the range of tasks asked of them today. So after performing several rounds of industry consultation and revision Bureau Veritas released the Safety Guidelines for Design, Construction and Operation of Tugs in June 2014. The tug guidelines were primarily developed with harbour tugs and escort tugs in mind, but certainly also apply to OSVs involved in towing, in particular AHT and AHTS vessels involved in rig moves, relocation of mobile offshore production units and emergency towing operations."
