Gary Mitchell, a serving helicopter crewman, listened to his friend Leslie Smith talking about his WWII experiences flying as a Lancaster crewman, and enlisted the help of two aviation historians to tell his story. On 26th July 1944, Sgt LB Smith began his operational flying tour as a wireless operator/air gunner in a 61 Sqn Lancaster Mk3. This first operational mission was to be cut unexpectedly short when the pilot lost control during line-up, ran over an 18-inch post and punctured a mainwheel. However, largely the same crew went on to complete 14 operational missions before transferring to a Pathfinder squadron to complete a further 24 before war's end.
