Rachael Broadribb, waste strategy officer, London Borough of Hackney

After graduating in geography from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Rachaei Broadribb moved to London and got a job with Hackney Council as a door knocker for the recycling team, with the aim of improving the recycling rate. She assumed the position of team leader during the door knocking campaign and was then offered the position of recycling assistant following the campaign - her career in the waste industry had begun. While at university Rachael had decided on a career in the public sector because she wanted to make a difference. She was attracted to work in waste because the recycling rate in Hackney, and the UK as a whole, was very low. She could see the potential to reduce waste and recycle more materials and the environmental benefits this would bring.
