Deanwood: a primary school on the superhighway

Educating pupils requires vision but also a strong grasp of reality. Dean-wood County Junior School in Kent is successfully using Internet applications in the curriculum as part of the Education Department Superhighways Initiative (EDSI). What is it like to be an early user of new technology and how are the pupils benefiting? Deanwood has 206 pupils ranging from ages 7 to 11 and the typical ability range is represented, from the very bright to those with special needs. Staff are extremely committed but at the start of the project felt that there was little time to take on new and complex teaching. The school is positioned in a large housing estate of families with children now mostly past primary school age which results in a falling school roll and restricted flexibility in the use of funds.
