Architecture, as an emotional and romantic art, has been eclipsed since the 1960s by knowing Post-Modern self-consciousness and the apparently impersonal imperatives of High-Tech. Basil Spence was one of the last practitioners of it being among the least self-conscious of architects, and lacking a consistent theoretical base, he could also be one of the most uninhibitedly romantic. He was, said his celebrated collaborating engineer Povl Ahm: 'very emotional, very creative, inspiring'.
