1. The United Nations appoints THERESA A. HITCHENS (above) to head the U.N.'s Institute for Disarmament Research (UNI-DIR). She is the fifth director of the independent Geneva-based body. Hitchens previously served as director of the Space Security Project of the Center for Defense Information in Washington. UNIDIR conducts relevant and policy-oriented research on topics as diverse as nuclear materials, confidence-building measures in South Asia, control of small arms ammunition, security of refugee camps, disarmament as humanitarian action, peacekeeping and remote sensing technologies in the service of peace and disarmament.
