The art of statistical analysis is in constant demand, and is perceived as being an essential part of the curriculum by many academic disciplines. In many universities one might find more statistics taught to, say, psychologists, medical scientists or engineers than to mathematicians. The problem then arises that these disciplines require competent people to teach their students and they turn to statisticians to supply the demand. Statisticians then have a dilemma. One the one hand they hate to see statistics taught badly by people they regard as poorly qualified. On the other hand teaching people from a different discipline can be very difficult. It can be very hard to get into the mindset of people for whom square-root signs and logarithms are arcane symbols that are regarded as higher mathematics.
