Brambles Shipping is the Bass Strait Cargo Services Division of the Australian, Brambles Marine Group and during the course of 1999, it took delivery of two ro-ro vessels of advanced design to operate on their Melbourne to Burnie, Tasmania, cargo service. Opened in 1985, the crossing was, until recently, maintained by two 7,200dwt freight ferries chartered from Stena. They operated a 16-hour schedule which will now be considerably reduced by Victorian Reliance, and first-of-class Tasmanian Achiever, both of which are capable of a service speed some 5-knots higher than that of the Stena vessels.
