The Australian Defence Minister has defended the A$100 million acquisition of a second-hand amphibious landing ship after a supersession report outlined some technical and design issues with the ship. With a recent poor history of ship availability that prevented the navy assisting in relief operations following Cyclone Yasi, which hit north Queensland, the Australian press was quick to seize on the negative aspects of the RFA Chief Engineer's assessment of the state of Largs Bay prior to her handover.
