For some years Brittany Ferries built up its route network with tonnage acquired in the second-hand market until taking the bull by the horns and ordering two substantial new-vessels at the end of the 1980s. But, instead of returning to the French yard that delivered the 24,534gt Bretagne for the Plymouth-Santander route in 1989, they looked to Finland, and not only contracted the Portsmouth-Caen route's first newbuilding Normandie with Kvaerncr Masa Yards but also boosted the then recently acquired Trueklinc with an order for ro-pax ferry Barflcur for Poole-Chcrbourg.
