Aside from the effects of typhoons and concerns over craft safety, one of the biggest bugbears for fishermen in South East Asia is the prevalence of illegal fishing. Countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines have long been plagued by the illicit practice. Despite capturing a number of boats used by illegal fisheries -many emanating from Vietnam, Thailand and, in rarer cases, China - Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries claims that illegal fishing robs the territory of US$3.1 billion each year.
