NEC Corp. (Tokyo) announced the successful development of fundamental silicon nanophotonics technology that facilitates optical data transmission in large-scale integration (LSI) chips by eliminating data transmission bottlenecks. This work was presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) earlier this year. NEC reported that the new technology reduces the footprint area for the optoelectronic signal transfer function to 10 μm~2, small enough to set onto an LSI chip. This was achieved by combining an ultrasmall amplifier with an existing silicon nano-photodiode.
