No identity crisis

International Telecommunications Union (ITU), it was decided to amend a recommendation that concerns the allocation of maritime mobile service identity (MMSI) numbers to man overboard (MOB) devices.The need for the amendment arose from the refusal of some national authorities to permit the use of MMSIs in equipment other than VHF radios. This refusal effectively limited the worldwide availability of MMSIs for use in MOB equipment. It is anticipated that the regulatory changes resulting from the amendment will be implemented in mid-2012.
