I'm currently considering applying for a council H&S managerial position but my experience to date has been mostly in the manufacturing/engineering industry, with a one-year spell in a CDM-C role. What are the main differences in terms of working for a local council as opposed to industry, and what skills would be beneficial in such a public-sector managerial role? Steven Bryan, section manager at Hays Health & Safety, comments: Over recent months we have experienced significant interest in public-sector opportunities across our various disciplines. In our own survey, we found that 72 per cent of private-sector workers are more likely to consider a public-sector job now compared with a year ago, owing to the economic downturn. The search for greater job security is the main reason behind considering a move to the public sector (73 per cent), followed by a desire for a better work-life balance (59 per cent), and improved benefits (37 per cent).
