What a refreshing publication! The introduction makes it dear that the book is not about telling health and safety practitioners WHAT we should be managing, but instead it is about HOW to manage health and safety. This book gives the health and safety professional practical and realistic approaches to setting up systems to manage health and safety in a way that can actually deliver results. If only it had been around in the early 90s, when I underwent a baptism of fire as a risk manager in a newly-formed NHS trust! The title of the first chapter, 'Clipboard and cagoule', raised a smile. I also chuckled when reading the following anecdote: you're in the pub and someone asks you what you do for a living, and you say, health and safety. I'll let you read the book to find out what Richard Byrne says about the reaction, though you can probably guess.
