Resounding critical praise met Hackett Hall McKnight's Metropolitan Arts Centre in Belfast, when it opened last month. Formed in 2003 and winning BD's Young Architect of the Year in 2008, the firm won the commission to design the city's £13m new visual arts centre in a RIBA competition in 2007. Composed of two structural concrete blocks, it draws on the aesthetic of the city's mill buildings and brick warehouses, and is partly clad in local black basalt stone.
