Jim Euchner [JE]: Bill, you started your career by building one of the very earliest tutoring systems using artificial intelligence (AI) methods. You recognized back then that the computer needed to have some understanding of the person it was helping. Your later work generalizes that to design of computer systems to amplify intelligence. Can you talk about how that early work evolved into your current focus?
