Amtrak may have to withdraw some passenger services from the end of this year, if the routes they use have not been equipped with Positive Train Control. That was the stark warning from its new President & CEO Richard Anderson when he appeared before the House of Representatives' Transportation & Infrastructure Committee on February 15.Amtrak trains had been affected by a number of safety-related incidents in the preceding three months, including the 125 km/h derailment of the inaugural Seattle - Portland Cascades Train 501 over the new Port Defiance bypass on December 18 which killed three passengers, a level crossing collision in West Virginia on January 31 and a head-on collision between the southbound Silver Star and a stabled CSX freight train at Cayse, South Carolina, on February 4, killing the driver and conductor.
