On August 21 First GBRf announced that it had been awarded a contract by Bombardier Transportation to deliver, test and maintain passenger rolling stock. Three distinct fleets of trains are involved, all based in London. Over a five-year period, First GBRf will deliver 1 395 metro cars from Derby to Metronet. Marshalled as 191 units of seven or eight cars, these trains will progressively replace London Underground's Sub-Surface fleet. First GBRf will also provide drivers and maintenance engineers for the testing and commissioning of the Electrostars which Bombardier is supplying for London Overground. According to the freight operator, 'servicing will be primarily delivered out of a new purpose-built maintenance facility situated at New Cross Gate', managed by Bombardier under a service provision contract.
