When City of Edinburgh Council decided on August 25 after four rounds of voting to rescind an earlier decision that the first tram route would run from the airport to St Andrew Square, close to Waveriey station, it really looked as though the whole project was dead. The decision meant cutting the first tram route back to Haymar-ket, 2 km from the centre of the city. Councillors had been informed that while a tram route from the airport to St Andrew Square would be profitable, a line to Haymarket would 'run at a permanent £4m annual loss' according to Councillor Jenny Dawe, Leader of the Council.
