Massive Edinburgh Trams expansion planned for 2030

As construction continues on the original Line 1A of the Edinburgh Trams system, an extension to Newhaven that is scheduled to open in early 2023, TramForward is delighted that both the City Council and the Scottish Government have put forward proposals for a new north-south line. The plan, approved by the city council's transport committee, is for a line running from Granton Harbour to either Roseburn or Shandwick Place on the existing central line. The route would then follow the city centre tracks before turning south-east down to the Royal Infirmary and Bio Quarter. The new line forms part of a wider ambition for a mass transit network, including trams, to be extended west from the airport and into West Lothian. The Council plans to have its final business case completed by 2025. The new lines will significantly reduce the need for private cars in the city and contribute to the Scottish Government's aim of reducing climate change pollution by decarbonisation. The city's trams will draw their traction power largely from renewable electricity.
