DfT U-turn on tram-trains

The exclusive article published by The RM last month pointing out the many shortcomings of proposed diesel 'tram-train' operation between Hudders-field and Sheffield was followed by a DfT decision to shelve the idea. It has instead opted to initiate a trial between Rotherham and Sheffield.rnThe DfT now considers that "electrically-powered trams are more economically viable for use in the UK than the diesel equivalent" although it fails to explain why it thought conditions were suitable for diesel vehicles when the trial was first announced.
