The hotel market in Liverpool would do well to pause for breath before adding further to its stock after an unprecedented period of growth. So says Paul Bolton (pictured), managing director of Sanguine Hospitality, a leisure trade operator that is working on two hotels in the city. The amount of centrally located hotels in Liverpool doubled from 16 in 1998 to 32 in 2008. Another five opened in 2009.Remarkably, occupancy levels have kept pace with the extra room stock. Take-up in February set a new record at 86% on weekends, and 67% over the whole month."I was a bit cynical about the impact of the new Arena and Convention Centre [opened in January 2008] on the city," admits Bolton. "But the amount of hotel bookings it has generated is phenomenal.
