Bobby Socks, Poodle Skirts and the Detroit Arrows were all hallmarks of the postwar era in America. A war-weary world was beginning to rediscover the better things in life, and that included travel. With a return to prosperity, former GIs whose only recollections of ocean travel were crowded troop ships became part of the vanguard that looked forward to visiting other countries with their spouses and exploring new cultures. While many made their dreams come true by sailing in dazzling new liners like the Constitution, Kungsholm, United States or Caronia, others chose a slower, more port-intensive way on the proverbial "slow boat" to China, South Africa or the Mediterranean. Those trips were made in different types of ships, such as a passenger-cargo liner, a cargo-passenger liner or passenger freighter.
