Long range optical fiber sensors for power cable maintenance havenbeen incorporated into a newly developed 500 kV DC submarine powerncable. Optical fibers are used for a distributed temperature sensor andna mechanical damage sensor. The distributed temperature sensor providesndata on temperature at distances up to 30 km, and the mechanical damagensensor locates external damage points on the submarine cable. After eachncharacteristic was investigated, optical fiber sensors were incorporatednon the submarine power cable. This composite cable was evaluated bynvarious mechanical tests. The results were satisfactory and showed thencomposite cable to be of practical use. This new approach ofnincorporating optical fiber sensors in the cable structure brings a newnsophistication and reliability to cable maintenance
