The UK Competition and Markets Authority has provisionally cleared the proposed merger between SSE Retail and Npower, the authority said August 30. After concerns in May that the merger could lead to higher Standard Variable Tariffs – the most common and expensive retail energy rates in the UK – a CMA inquiry panel has found SSE and Npower are not close rivals for SVT customers, and a merger would not affect how the companies set their tariffs.
