There is no doubt that the abuse of alcohol causes severe damage both to the individuals concerned and to wider society, including in the workplace. In fact, the cost of alcohol abuse to UK workplaces is reported to be about £2 billion a year. The consequences of drinking to excess do not stop at the factory gate or office door. For instance, some employees might arrive for work somewhat hungover which is not likely to do much for their productivity in the short term. Others may sneak a drink throughout the working day - in which case there is a clear danger of alcoholism. Such behaviour can lead to unsafe workplaces (especially in areas such as all forms of transport, healthcare, working with heavy machinery etc), absenteeism, fraud and criminal behaviour.
