The Department of Health is consulting on new legislation that will give greater protection to patients treated by self-employed health professionals. Under the new legislation, which is due to go live in October, all regulated healthcare professionals in the UK must take out indemnity insurance as a condition of their registration. Most health professionals already take out indemnity insurance or are covered by their employer, even when their regulatory body does not insist on it.
