Nuclear operating capacity to grow by 10.7 GW in 2020: Platts Analytics

Nuclear power operating capacity will grow globally by 10.7 GW in 2020, largely as a result of China’s ambitious reactor construction program, according to a January 12 report by S&P Global Platts Analytics. Operating capacity is the generating capacity producing or ready to produce electricity at any given time. China’s nuclear power net operating capacity “will be slightly above 55 GW” by the end of this year, which is shy of the 58 GW target set for 2020 in that country’s 13th Energy Plan, Platts Analytics said. China's nuclear power installed gross capacity was 48.74 GW in 2019, according to the country's National Energy Adminsitration. Seven nuclear units of 6.6 GW in net operating capacity are expected to begin commercial operation in China this year, compared to three units that started commercial operation last year totaling 4 GW of operating capacity and six in 2018 with 9 GW of operating capacity, Platts Analytics said.
