LARGEST BATCH OF RUSSIAN-ORIGIN HEU RETURNED TO FORMER SOVIET UNION

Eighty kilograms of highly enriched uranium spent nuclear fuel has been returned to Russia from the Czech Republic, representing the largest return of Russian-origin spent HEU since the United States and Russia agreed to the Bratislava Joint Statement on Nuclear Security Cooperation in 2005. In coordination with Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the National Nuclear Security Administration contributed $17 million to the removal of the spent fuel from a research reactor at the Nuclear Research Institute in Rez, Czech Republic. The spent fuel—in the form of 549 irradiated fuel assemblies—was shipped to a temporary storage facility in Mayak, Russia for processing.
