Largest campaign to return HEU fuel is completed

A record amount of high-enriched urani-um (HEU) fuel has been returned to its country of origin with the assistance of the Department of Energy's National Nucle-ar Security Administration, the agency an-nounced on October 12. The NNSA said that it had removed over 450 kilograms of Russian-origin HEU spent fuel from Poland, enough material to make more than 18 nu-clear weapons. The material was sent back to Russia in a series of five shipments over 12 months, marking the completion of the largest spent fuel shipment campaign in the NNSA's his-tory.
