Nnsa Completes Return Of 56 Kg Of U.s.-origin Heu Spent Fuel

Nearly 56 kilograms of eligible highly enriched uranium spent fuel has been returned to the United States over the last year as part of the National Nuclear Security Administration's Global Threat Reduction Initiative, and the agency has completely removed spent fuel eligible for return from Argentina, Portugal, Romania and Germany. The most recent shipment of U.S.-origin spent HEU involved the return of 10.3 kilograms from Germany Sept. 23, the second of two shipments from Germany in the last year. The HEU was taken to the NNSA's Savannah River Site, where it could be down-blended into low-enriched uranium. In all, 19.1 kilograms of eligible U.S.-origin HEU was removed from Germany, 15.3 kilograms was removed from Romania, 6.6 kilograms was removed from Portugal, and 6 kilograms was removed from Argentina. The agency also removed 8.7 kilograms from Japan.
