When chemistry teacher David Vines enters a classroom at Sutton Grammar School for Boys near London, the students look forward to his lesson. Many practising scientists will remember a teacher like him - a gifted educator who knows how to engage his pupils and spark an interest in science. To make classes more stimulating, Vines asks his students to fill in educational crosswords or play card games with chemical elements. And as often as possible, he lets them do hands-on experiments or shows videos of classic ones - such as generating carbon dioxide from calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid. "It depends on how well a class behaves, but I do think that science should be taught as practically as possible," he says. "They love explosions the most."
