Learning how to listen

The number of long serving coun-cil directors that give the impres-sion there's nothing left for them to know is, thankfully, rapidly diminishing. But it is still heartening to meet a public servant who, after almost 18 years at the top, is adamant he can still learn from his staff and the people for whom he provides services. In his time as director of social services at Durham CC, Peter Kemp has not wavered from his belief that as well as being there to lead and manage he must also carry a commitment to listen and learn.
