Woodall, himself a veteran and alumnus of Texas A&M, has previously published a work about Medal of Honor recipients. Twelve succinct, fast-paced chapters depict heroes from WWI to Viet Nam, well documented by historical research, The work is not limited to individual stories, but rather encompasses the whole of war circumstances, offering a broad view. Twelve map supplements of battles aid the narrative. Each hero's story is distinctive. The atrocities of MG George F. Moore's captivity while a POW of the Japanese and his eventual release culminates with his suicide, an all-too-frequent demise of veterans still to this day. The account of LTG Andrew D. Bruce's four decades of service is inundated with military tactics: an exciting rendition of the bail-out by the pilot and his crew while on a bombing run over Japan makes suspenseful reading. An account of another downed and wounded pilot's survival at sea for 30 hours ends with his fortuitous rescue. Pilot Lt. Gen. Jay T. Robin's escapades include descriptive aerial dogfights with the Japanese.
