"Vanished Hero" is a biography of Elwyn G. Righetti, who was not as well-known as other American aces of World War Ⅱ like Bong, Gabreski, McDonald, McGuire, Yeager, Robert S. Johnson, David Schilling, Ira Kepford, "Pappy" Boyington, etc. Part of that reason is because most of his victories were over aircraft on the ground. Near the end of WWII, the Army Air Corps wanted the Luftwaffe destroyed by any means and started giving full credit for ground kills. Germany was running out of skilled pilots and fuel. They were still building aircraft in underground factories.
