The monarch is the nominal commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Control over security matters is exercised by the National Security Council (NSC), which was established in May 2010. The National Security Council is chaired by the prime minister and includes the Secretary of State for Defense, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Security Minister, the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, the Secretary of State for International Development, and the Home Secretary.
